Getting my nails wrapped?

If I get my own nails wrapped am I going to have to get the first layer of my nails shaved off? I noticed that that piece of equipment they use, it seems take off a layer of nail? Makes them so weak. I noticed they use it before applying false nails on woman. Why? will I just be able to have my nails wrapped without them using that nail shaver thing. lolGetting my nails wrapped?
